Edit, Edit, Edit!

Take some time and view your home from a fresh angle or perspective. Have a friend look around with you. And then take something away! Less really is more so don’t feel you have to have a lot of items on display to have an interesting or elegant style.

Less allows the eye to rest and appreciate the form or arrangement and that brings more pleasure to the viewer.

Less clutter is soothing and relaxing and puts you in a peaceful state of mind.

So go and put something away!

Inspiration

Design is so amazing and so exciting! Look for it everwhere! Stuck at a traffic light, waiting on line for lunch–take a minute to just look at the world around you. Get inspired!

How is the traffic light made, the shapes, the colors–can it find its way into your home? Something fun in a kids room, play room, or outside in the garden?

Bring into your home things that you like–things that bring you joy, comfort, a laugh. So take a minute today and really take in the world around you and see what inspires you!

Perfect Pasta!

Look at the great layers of texture! The artful arrangement. Inspiration comes from anywhere. Bring this into your home. Vary your textures from silky draperies to nubby chenille pillows to rich, hewn woods or cool, sleek metals. Textures help break up the landscape for the eye and bring in the pleasure of the sense of touch.

Pretty Plate

Such a pretty presentation. Visualize your collection, laid out simply and elegantly like this. Three is usually more pleasing to the eye, but four does offer nice balance and symmetry. Don’t crowd your collection. Arrange four objects against a clean, simple background and let them speak for themselves.

Seasons Change

The brilliant colors of fall have faded and left an austere quiet in nature. The winter is coming.  The colors this year were amazing. I was particularly drawn to the deep maroons and the electric oranges. The color was so deep and intense it seemed the trees would burst like a kernel of corn. Don’t let the change get you down. The bare, naked nature before you has much to offer. The architectural maze of branches can offer a new perspective. Grab some big branches and bring them in for a fresh curtain rod or mantel display. Smaller branches can be nested and provide a base for fall squash and pumpkin displays. Mix branches and white twinkle lights for a magical center or mantel piece. Embrace the light once blocked by leaves that now comes through. In the woods where I am it frees up the views and the grand vista of nature becomes more open and expansive. Meditate on the quiet. The shedding of what was and the hope of what will be. Incorporate that into your design at home. Clear out the clutter and go for simple, elegant displays. Change things around. Bring in the branches (make sure to leave all bugs outside) and maybe even a display of some interesting fallen leaves. Have kids? Make and old school favorite of leaf art and display for all to see and enjoy. Every change is a new beginning and a fresh chance to mix it up and have fun. Bring that fresh attitude to your home.

Design is so amazing and so everchanging it is so exciting. Every day is a new day and a new opportunity to find inspiration in our day to day grind. Stuck at a traffic light, waiting on line for lunch–take a minute to just look at the world around you. How is the traffic light made, the shapes, the colors–can it find its way into your home? Something fun in a kids room, play room, or outside in the garden? The biggest tip any designer will or should give you is to bring into your home things that you like–things that bring you joy, comfort, a laugh. So take a minute today and really take in the world around you and see what inspires you!
